Interface Design

Student Assistant Tool

Purpose

The purpose of the Student Assistant Tool is to provide students with an electronic all-in-one device that can be used for taking notes during class, organizing events in a calendar, checking email, and accessing the Internet. This hypothetical device includes a high-resolution touch-screen in a form factor that is smaller than a laptop, but larger than a PDA. This design allows for more screen surface area for taking notes than the smaller PDA devices. Students would be able to replace their heavy laptops, notebooks, day planners, and class readings from their backpacks with this one lightweight device.

Features

This quarter long design project provided the opportunity to complete an entire product development cycle, including:

  • Analyzing feature requirements - to determine the critical features to include in the interface based on interviews and surveys from the target audience.
  • Creating personas - created based on the target audience to refer to throughout the design process.
  • Performing tasks analysis
  • Developing interface prototypes - created several design iterations of the interface for usability testing by the target audience.
  • Usability Testing - ran multiple usability testing field trials and created several design iterations based on user feedback and performance before finalizing the design.

Persona

Purpose

Personas are used throughout the design process to keep the design focused on its intended users. These personas were created for a cellphone application that was intended to be used in bars or clubs.

Features

The personas were developed from data gathered during non-obtrusive observation studies from several bars in the Seattle, WA area. I used actual data from observations and interviews to capture realistic images of the intended audience. This ensures that the personas will be accurate and useful to use throughout the design process.
